Nero 9.4 Free

Today Nero decided to give as free one of their basic versions, Nero 9.4.12.3. They say this is a restricted version since it has only data burning and disc copying features for CDs and DVDs, advanced features being available in the full version.

Nevertheless, Nero's only thing I would use is the burning engine (I don't care about the backup or other utilities they offer in the full version) and this comes as handy as possible.

You can enter your email and receive the license here - Nero 9.4 (free). I don't know if this is a time-limted thing or if they're going to have this free product from now on, but given that there are so many free CD/DVD burners out there, it's probably a wise marketing decision from their part.

STOPzilla Anti-spyware free (via TrialPay)

STOPzilla was released in 2001 as a pop-up blocker from the developer iS3. Years later, after it had a reputation for blocking unwanted pests, STOPzilla became a full anti-spyware utility that protects your computer against the unwanted-wares that can be such a pain in the back.

STOPzilla is a subscription based program, meaning monthly you’ll have to pay for a fee to use it. Normally an yearly fee is around $40 per year, but right now they have a promotion for around $10/year (not that bad), however it’s one of the offers on Trialpay which means that you can get it for free when you complete one of the offers from the advertisers listed via TrialPay. You can get it here: STOPzilla Anti-spyware (free via Trialpay).

For those that don’t know what TrialPay is and what completing an offer means, here’s a quote from a previous post on what that means:

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of STOPzilla or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up. For instance if you need to buy flowers, stamps or anything else that crosses your mind, you can do that via Trialpay and still get STOPzilla free as a bonus when you complete that offer (Bestbuy, stamps.com, Sony, apple, and many others are available as advertisers you can complete an offer with).

What features does STOPzilla offer:

  • STOPzilla offers real-time protection, meaning it detects, blocks and quarantines spywares right before they unleash their malefic powers
  • Advanced pop-up blocker, probably the most advanced one since they practically perfected the technology
  • Frequent auto-updates, meaning spyware signatures are downloaded and ready to use as soon as they find how to remove them
  • Benefits from the KISS interface design (keep it simple, …)

My review of STOPzilla: I used it back when it was only a pop-up blocker, and out of curiosity a little while ago, so my experience with STOPzilla antispyware is not that extensive. However, the first thing that you see is the simple interface, and backed by a “runs all by itself in the background” design, you basically install and forget about it. While it protects you of course. STOPzilla received the "West Coast Labs independent test”, which is quite a reputable award in the field of anti-spyware applications, so yes, it can remove threats and protect your system. How does STOPzilla compare with Spyware Doctor or other anti-spyware applications? I don’t want to go there, all have their pros and cons, and the best thing to do is a test before everything else.

After, if you like STOPzilla, you can order it via TrialPay. STOPzilla is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get STOPzilla for free: beg them. or use TrialPay.

Spyware Doctor free (via TrialPay)

Spyware Doctor, published by PC Tools, the makers of now popular Registry Mechanic, lets you clean up your computer from possible spyware infections (the name is not their best choice, as you’d think of it as a doctor that cures sick spyware, making them better – I would’ve went for something like Spyware Remover). Leaving the joke aside, Spyware Doctor can help you when you’re having problems with those spyware pests, that clogs your computer and redirect your browser to all sorts of porn sites (paid ones, that’s the bummer).

Spyware Doctor normally costs around $30, but since it’s one of the offers on Trialpay you can get it for free when you complete one of the offers from their listed advertisers. You can get it here: Spyware Doctor (free via Trialpay).

For those that don’t know what TrialPay is and what completing an offer means, here’s a quote from a previous post on what that means:

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of Spyware Doctor or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up. For instance if you need to buy flowers, stamps or anything else that crosses your mind, you can do that via Trialpay and still get Spyware Doctor free as a bonus when you complete that offer (Bestbuy, stamps.com, Sony, apple, and many others are available as advertisers you can complete an offer with).

What features does Spyware Doctor offer:

  • Spyware scanner and infections remover
  • Password protect the program settings to avoid hijacks
  • Full screen mode, meaning no interruptions when you play games or watch movies, even if threats are found (and cured)
  • Smart spyware signature updates
  • Add-ons available (site guard, email guard, behavior guard)

My review of Spyware Doctor: I admit that before using it, I used other freeware spyware removers. One of them was Spybot Search and Destroy, and the other was Lavasoft’s Ad-aware Free anniversary edition. However, I couldn’t resist the temptation to get Spyware Doctor for free, and used Trialpay to get it. I still keep Spybot installed, but mainly use Spyware Doctor. Truth be told, given that I had 2 spyware programs installed until now, Spyware Doctor didn’t find any threats on the scan (except some cookies), so I can’t vouch for how effective it is against spyware infections. If we were to consider the awards it received (including positive reviews from respectable magazines such as PC World and PC Magazine) and the fact that you hear about them everywhere (they were included on Google Pack too), it’s pretty safe to say that you will be protected from porn site browser redirecting (involuntarily, that is). I’ll keep using it, and if anything bothers me during this time I’ll surely post about it.

Spyware Doctor is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get Spyware Doctor for free: they do promotions with magazines from time to time and give free versions, however the catch is that it’s an older version, not the most current one. So if you do want to go with their latest version, the only legal solution is TrialPay – I’ll keep looking for one of their magazine promotions too.

TrialPay offers (2009)

There are now I guess close to 500 trialpay offers in total, for previous and current year. I’ve grouped on a previous post the Trialpay offers for 2007 and 2008, but there were others added in 2009 that I don’t want do add in there. This is why I’m creating a new list with the TrialPay offers for 2009. Except for the Rapidshare accounts that are now available on Trialpay, and a few other applications like Pzizz, Wintools, most of the applications added in 2009 pale in comparison with their previous offers (if you look at the list you’ll see Trialpay accepted ebooks to be listed too, such as those about “How to make money on the internet” or “Free XBOX live gold account” – jeesh). However, those that are interested in owning one of these applications and want to avoid paying the full price, can do that by simply visiting the link provided below (some of them don’t have links yet, I’ll add them when I’ll have more time as you can guess this gets boring).

ZoneAlarm Internet Security free for 1 year (via Trialpay)

ZoneAlarm Internet Security is developed by Zonelabs, and has a long history with firewalls, since ZoneAlarm was initially only a simple firewall. However, they’ve released other security products too, and ZoneAlarm Internet Security combines now a firewall, antispyware, antispam, antivirus and parental control software.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security 8 normally costs around $50 per year for one pc (yes, it’s an yearly subscription), but since it’s offered via TrialPay you can get it for free when you complete one of the offers from the listed advertisers. You can get it here: ZoneAlarm Internet Security 8 (free via Trialpay).

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of ZoneAlarm Internet Security or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up. For instance if you need to buy flowers, stamps or anything else that crosses your mind, you can do that via Trialpay and still get ZoneAlarm Internet Security 8 free as a bonus when you complete that offer (Bestbuy, stamps.com, Sony, apple, and many others are available as advertisers you can complete an offer with).

What features does ZoneAlarm Internet Security 8 offers:

  • automatically configures security settings based on behavioral usage
  • detects and secures wireless connections
  • suppresses security alerts when you want to play games
  • monitors and blocks suspicious outgoing/incoming traffic
  • stealth mode to make you invisible for hackers
  • blocks rootkit attacks and protects your system from boot time
  • prevents visit to spyware infected sites
  • spyware detection and removal features
  • identity theft protection
  • virus detection and removal in real-time
  • blocks spam/dangerous emails
  • blocks inappropriate websites that contain offensive web content

My review of ZoneAlarm Internet Security: I’ll start with what I don’t like, I don’t like the fact that you pay yearly a subscription fee instead of paying a one-time fee and benefit from free upgrades. But then again, this happens with most security programs nowadays, and most likely will be expanded to other categories. ZoneAlarm was my first used firewall, and I’ve used it for a long time, not because I was afraid that some hacker might connect and control my computer, but because I could control all the outgoing traffic and allow/deny traffic requests on a per-case basis. Since I now use a router with its own firewall, I stopped using ZoneAlarm. However, if you want to use an all-in-one security suite, ZoneAlarm Internet Security is a very good choice for its price, considering that it has a firewall, antivirus, antispyware, antispam and parental control software.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get ZoneAlarm Internet Security for free: The only solution I’m aware of for now is TrialPay. If you know any others, please share.

Cisco Network Magic Essentials free (via Trialpay)

Cisco Network Magic is developed by Pure Networks, a company aquired in 2008 by Cisco Systems (“the” Cisco systems, the leaders in anything network-related and with more than 60000 employees). Getting back on the track, Cisco Network Magic helps you set up a network (or repair/optimize and existing one), lets you easily share files between the computers in that network, and also acts as a firewall protecting your network from intruders.

Cisco Network Magic Essentials 5.5 normally costs around $30, but since it’s offered via Trialpay you can get it for free when you complete one of the offers from the listed advertisers. You can get it here: Cisco Network Magic Essentials (free via Trialpay).

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of Cisco Network Magic or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up. For instance if you need to buy flowers, stamps or anything else that crosses your mind, you can do that via Trialpay and still get Cisco Network Magic Essentials 5.5 free as a bonus when you complete that offer (Bestbuy, stamps.com, Sony, apple, and many others are available as advertisers you can complete an offer with).

What features does Cisco Network Magic Essentials 5.5 offers:

  • lets you see what happens on a network map
  • gives you details about the network device
  • centralized dashboard with access to everything
  • choose what wireless network to use
  • go wireless automatically
  • easily add new network devices (Linksys or other brand)
  • print from any computer in your network to a shared printer
  • share files and folders with other computers
  • view network activity
  • add security to your wireless network
  • detect intruders and prevent them from accessing the network
  • internet connection repair
  • network health and security alerts

My review of Cisco Network Magic Essentials: If you have at home at least 2 computers and you’ve tried setting up sharing or tried to have the “perfect” network, you know how Windows can make that a hassle. It’s either that the other computer is in a different workgroup, or that you cannot access the network or something else that makes you pull your hair. This is where Cisco Network Magic is good, because it frees you from that hassle. It’s true I used their Pro edition, not the Essentials one (mainly because of it's “spying” features that lets you control what happens with the network), but still the basic features are available in the Essentials version and it’s worth every penny if you’re trying to set up a network. As a tip, use this with your Linksys device to get the most out of it.

Cisco Network Magic Essentials is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get Cisco Network Magic Essentials for free: Well the Essentials edition you can’t get for free unless you’re doing it through Trialpay, but it’s worth mentioning that with every Linksys by Cisco hardware item they also bundle Cisco Network Magic Basic (which has less features than Essentials). If you do want to go with their latest version, the only legal solution is TrialPay.

Registry Mechanic free via TrialPay

Registry Mechanic, published by PC Tools, does what the name suggests – cleans you your registry from leftover registry entries (lots of them do when you uninstall programs) speeding up the booting time this way.

Registry Mechanic normally costs around $30, but since it’s offered via Trialpay you can get it for free when you complete one of the offers from the listed advertisers. You can get it here: Registry Mechanic (free via Trialpay).

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of Registry Mechanic or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up. For instance if you need to buy flowers, stamps or anything else that crosses your mind, you can do that via Trialpay and still get Registry Mechanic free as a bonus when you complete that offer (Bestbuy, stamps.com, Sony, apple, and many others are available as advertisers you can complete an offer with).

What features does Registry Mechanic offer:

  • Cleans the registry and fixes Windows errors/crashes
  • Defragments the registry to optimize your pc
  • Repairs registry entries if needed

My review of Registry Mechanic: I haven’t used it for a while now, and what I tested was an older version that I got free from a magazine promotion. It worked well, I mean there’s not much to test with a registry cleaner, you simply install it, run a scan and fix the broken registry entries (or remove those not used anymore). It does make a difference if you do it the first time after quite a while since you reinstalled the system, but to be honest I cannot see how using a registry cleaner repeatedly over a short period of time can make such an improvement in performance. While I used it everything worked ok, and I’ve seen indeed a difference in boot time after the first usage. The only problem I had was with an older version of Groove that I had installed, because after I ran Registry Mechanic and cleaned the broken registry keys, Groove didn’t work anymore (it was Groove 3.1). Not sure whose fault was that, Groove’s or Registry Mechanic’s, but I clicked “Undo” in Registry Mechanic and everything was as before I ran it. After that I manually accepted all the registry clean fixes, and solved my Groove problem. To sum up, Registry Mechanic is a decent registry cleaner (and defragmenter), so if you’re always trying to squeeze the most out of your system it’s a good choice.

Registry Mechanic is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get Registry Mechanic for free: they do promotions with magazines from time to time and give free versions, however the catch is that it’s an older version, not the most current one. You can get Registry Mechanic 7 (the current version is 8) using the VNU promotion, if you download it from here http://www.vnudownloads.co.uk/7.0.0.1010VNU_46878-RMpromo.exe and after that get your free registration key here - http://www.pctools.com/en/registry-mechanic/free/promo/INCISIVE1208/. If you do want to go with their latest version, the only legal solution is TrialPay.

Update: The links are now valid for AVG Antivirus 2013, AVG Internet Security 2013 and AVG PC TuneUp 2013 too.

AVG Anti-Virus is free for home users, and probably is the most popular antivirus solution out there. Beside the free AVG version, they do offer 2 commercial solutions: AVG Anti-Virus Pro and AVG Internet Security.

AVG Anti-Virus Pro is offered via Trialpay for free, as long as you complete one offer from Trialpay. You can get it here: AVG Anti-Virus Pro 8.5 free for 1 year.

The "complete an offer" first sounds a bit tricky, but trust me that if you used Trialpay before there's always a chance you'd complete an offer that costs you way less then the full price of AVG Anti-Virus Pro (normally $35) or even find an offer that requires no money from you, just to sign-up.

What features does AVG Anti-Virus Pro offer:

  • Protects you against viruses, spyware, adware and trojans
  • Protects in real time while you’re surfing against web pages with malicious code
  • Offers real-time safety ratings for search results (Google, Yahoo and Bing)
  • Installs the AVG security Toolbar
  • Scans your downloads and prevents infections through instant messaging applications
  • Protects against hidden threats such as rootkits

My review of AVG Anti-Virus Pro: Overall, AVG Anti-Virus is what I normally recommend to users that need a free solution and are from a country that doesn’t have any Trialpay offers to benefit from the Pro edition. I’ve been using AVG Pro (network edition) well over 2 years now, and my only complaint with it is the fact that if you enter a folder with multiple executable files (such as the one I keep my downloads in), I feel a bit of a slowdown as it screens through all the downloads. However, this is a minor inconvenience given that it saved my arse a lot of times now, mainly through blocking temporary “poisoned” files that infected web pages place in. I highly recommend AVG Anti-virus.

AVG Anti-Virus is only one of many other offers that Trialpay has, you can see a full list in one of my older (but updated) posts – “Free with Trialpay” list of offers.

Other ways to get AVG Anti-Virus for free: they do promotions with magazines from time to time and give free versions for 1 year, but right now I’m not aware of any active promotion. So if you want to be legit (i.e. not using avg cracked from a rapidshare link, which is highly risky) Trialpay is the option for AVG Pro.
